Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem

The Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem was a hospitaller monastic order that specialized in the care of leper. Their hospital was outside the walls of Jerusalem and later Acre after the fall of Jerusalem to Saladin. They originally had leper masters but later healthy brothers were allowed to become master of the order. They became militarized in the 13th century but were not successful in battle. According to the laws of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, leprous knights were supposed to join this order when they became sick. The Templars transferred their leprous brothers to St. Lazarus but it is unknown if the Hospitallers did so or if they treated their own leprous brothers. Despite having leprosy, Baldwin IV of Jerusalem never joined the order. He didn't even make a gift to the order although other nobles and monarchs (including his father Amalric I of Jerusalem) did so.
