Amalric I of Jerusalem was the brother of Baldwin III of Jerusalem and became king after his brother died. As a condition of becoming king, he was forced to leave his wife Agnes of Courtenay but he persuaded the pope to legitimize his two children from this marriage, the future Baldwin IV of Jerusalem and Sibylla of Jerusalem. He later married Maria Comnena and had another daughter named Isabella of Jerusalem. He died in 1174 after a short illness and his son Baldwin IV became king after him.
